This obsidian spear tip was fashioned during the early Mayan period. The Mayan's love of violence and warfare made them into true artists when it came to creating razor sharp weapons. Obsidian, which is natural volcanic glass, was greatly preferred as its high density allowed for it to be turned into razor sharp objects when treated properly. Processing obsidian is exceptionally difficult, but this was part of the challenge the Mayans were looking for. Creating the spear's tip presented an additional challenge, as perfect symmetry is required for a good throw.
