Perfectly preserved tooth of a truly mythical creature, Megatherium.
Megatherium is an extinct mammal genus and the best known representative of the ground sloths. These herbivores could grow up to be six metres long, two metres tall at the hip and weighed up to 3.8 tons. They lived in Central America and the southern United States. 6 species have been described, of which Megatherium americanum was the largest (larger than a mammoth).
Although they were herbivores, they had two large razor-sharp claws on both hands, with which they broke off branches but that were also an important element in the protection against predators, such as Smilodon.
The extinction of Megatherium has often been attributed to the rise of humans and hunting.
